" Love is the only rational act "
Mitch , a sports journalist, gets to know of his favorite professor Morrie on a TV show, that he is counting his last days from a terminal illness. Mitch recollects his adieu on the college final day and his promise to keep in touch with Morrie, which is unfulfilled and sixteen long years have gone by. As he decides to meet Professor Morrie, the warmth of the dying man, his effervescent liveness and his last lecture to his favorite student on life, is what we get to read in this book.
They say, An old person is a living treasure of gold , to top that Mr.Morrie is a professor of sociology, who defined his own sub culture on things that he regards as his life's purpose. He says to Mitch, The way you get meaning into your life is to devote yourself to loving others, devote yourself to your community around you and devote yourself to something that gives yo purpose and meaning.

Mitch undergoes a myriad of emotions, as he sees his loving professor wither down to his disease, as we read, we too feel it. But he is willed to get his last lecture on different aspects of life from his professor who is more brave, more serene, empathizing even as death approaches. Their last lectures happen every tuesday as it was their custom back in college days. Professor's idea of a fulfilled life are mind blowing, which changed his student's ways. Finally Morrie passes away, giving us this wonderful read on regrets, death, family, emotions, fear of aging, money, marriage, forgiveness. I bet we become a better human, listening to his last lecture.
"A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops" - Henry Adams
There are people in our lives, our teachers, mentors who carved our personalities and enriched our souls. Maybe in this fast paced world, while running behind money and power, like the author, we would have forgotten our promises to keep in touch. This book reminds those lovely people, the warmth, sunshine and wisdom they gifted us. A touching read that rekindles our soul, hidden behind layers of materialistic desire.
Some of the lines that could make us pause and ponder.
I traded lot of dreams for a bigger paycheck, and I never even realized I was doing it.
Life is a series of pulls back and forth. You want to do one thing but you are bound to do something else. Something hurts you, yet you know it shouldn't. You take certain things for granted, even when you know you should never take anything for granted. A tension of opposites, like a pull on a rubber band and most of us live somewhere in the middle
If you are trying to show off for people at the top, forget it. They will look down at you anyhow. And if you are trying to show off for people at the bottom, forget it. They will only envy you. Status will get you nowhere. Only an open heart will allow you to float equally between everyone.
Finally thanks to my loving teammates who gifted me this book on my farewell. Every time I read this, its the warmth of that wonderful journey with them, that flashes in my mind.
